With “Homecoming” as its central theme for the 2022 BIG immersive and interactive event, Hampton Art Lovers will present a thematically curated Black art experience with an engaging panel discussion and an incisive exploration of homecoming’s powerful impact in Black diasporic culture. The visual art and the accompanying conversation will explore the importance of Black expressive culture and an examination of Black joy through African and African American art.
Too Black Too Fast
A curated art installation in celebration of the African-American contribution to Thoroughbred horse racing.
Baccarat, Pegasus World Cup and Hampton Art Lovers presents: "Too Black, Too Fast", an art exhibition sponsored by luxury brand Baccarat showcasing the portraiture and history of African American jockeys in thoroughbred horse racing and America's first professional athlete. More than 200 years before Jackie Robinson took to the baseball field, Black Jockeys ruled this "Sport of Kings" from 1600s until the early 1900s. The show in Historic Overtown is apart of the 2022 Pegasus World Cup activities at Gulfstream Park.

This unique installation is an interactive multimedia series of programs featuring photography, literature, music, food and dance that commemorates the one year anniversary of the first lives lost to the pandemic in Miami. "Dennis Manuel: The Eye of AFROPUNK": an exploration into the realm of AFROPUNK through the lens of Dennis Manuel.
Award-winning photographer Dennis Manuel has been capturing Black performance art for over 20 years as a freelancer for national media outlets and NY performance venues. He also serves as the official Afropunk photographer, "Dennis Manuel: The Eye of AFROPUNK" presents a look into the celebration of Blackness found within the realm of Afropunk’s eclectic stage performances, inclusive crowd, and groundbreaking expressionism.

“IMAGES OF ABSTRACTION,” presented by Hampton Art Lovers (HAL), is a series of abstract works of art from various African-American artists.
HAL presents these works in the spirit of re-defining and re-imagining the aesthetic limitations imposed on Black artistic production. It is not enough to say "Black is Beautiful.” In terms of artistry, color alone cannot contain Blackness. The Black-American aesthetic, abstractly expressed in this presentation, erases the confines of contemporary racial conventions.
Purvis Comes Home : Manchild in the Promised Land
Hampton Art Lovers at the Historic Ward Rooming House presents "Purvis Comes Home : Manchild in the Promised Land" in conjunction with the City of Miami - S.E. Overtown / Park West CRA.
Hampton Art Lovers presents an exclusive collection of Purvis Young (1943-2010) in the community (Overtown) that birthed his genius. Young is the most renowned visual artist from South Florida, his work is grounded in the experiences of an African-American man seeking Freedom in his "Promised Land" of Historic Overtown. Purvis was a visual folklorist, and an outsider to the art world. He was prolific and criticized for painting too much. In his own words: "they don't say that birds fly too much, Shakespeare wrote too much or opera singers sing too much - But it don't bother me".

We post these works in the spirit of protest for the wrongful death of George Floyd by Minneapolis police and all black men throughout the history of the United States of America. All the works are found on pages of books and catalogues shown and cited in the post.

The Art of the Southern Vernacular
Hampton Art Lovers Presents: "The Art of the Southern Vernacular" featuring Leroy Campbell with Krystal Hart as apart of Black History Month.
African-American Vernacular English shares a large portion of its grammar and phonology with the rural dialects of the southern United States, and especially older southern American English, due to historical connections of African Americans to the region. American creole developed from one or more creole languages used by African captives of the Atlantic slave trade, due to the captives speaking many different native languages and therefore needing a new way to communicate among themselves and with their captors.
